Daphne Middle School held its 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Friday, January 13. Out of seventeen participants, eighth grade student Deirryah Sappington-Allen won the bee by spelling the word “residue” on the sixth round. Tiffany Slagle came in second place. Students first participated in a classroom bee through their English classes, and then the winners of the classroom bee moved on to the school bee. Deirryah will move on to the Baldwin County division spelling bee held on February 7 at 4 P.M. at the Loxley Civic Center. She was awarded a trophy, a participation certificate, a powerspeak online world language course, and a one-year subscription to Britannica online for kids. Thank you to Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Amanda Blake, for sponsoring this year’s event. Also, thank you to Yvonne Hamilton, retired teacher for serving as moderator/announcer.
Congratulations to all participants and winners!
