Writing is a gift like no other. Writing well can influence people and change minds. SEEDS, Daphne's education foundation, hopes to encourage a lifelong love of writing through a new community project called Daphne Writes!
SEEDS is working with language arts teachers from the foundation's six participating schools to promote the art and value of writing and to involve community members in improving student achievement. DMS is proud to announce that our own, Amanda Blake is a member of the Daphne Writes Committee.
Residents and education supporters of all ages are invited to join students and teachers in writing about timely themes and issues of importance to the community. Topics will be announced on SEEDS' new blog site at seedsindaphne.wordpress.com and promoted by teachers and project volunteers.
Inspired by current economic news, the kick-off theme emphasizes how learning to live with less requires changes in habits and attitudes. Those interested in taking part are asked to share their thoughts on the following question:
"Money is tight for everyone these days and many families are making changes. What are you doing differently?"
Short essays on this theme will be accepted on the blog site and by email at info@seedsindaphne.org through the end of October. A new holiday theme will be announced in November.
Additional community activities to celebrate the art of writing will be held throughout the 2009-10 school year. For more information, contact SEEDS at (251)656-7333 or info@seedsindaphne.org.
